Watercolor Methods videoWatercolor Methods

This program introduces a variety of materials for watercolor including different types of papers, brushes, and tube and pan pigments. Demonstrations with these materials explore wet-on-wet, controlled washes, dry brush, lifting pigment with a brush, scarring the paper and spattering. A demonstration painting utilizing these methods is then completed.

Color videoColor

The artist presents an introductory overview of color concepts and color combinations. Some of the subjects presented use primary, secondary, and intermediate color, after-image, intensity, contrast, color value as well as monochromatic and analogous color schemes. Composition videoComposition

Stephen Quiller shows painters how to develop compositions progressively from different subjects and how various shapes and values of a subject can trigger ideas for the painting. Starting with a quick compositional sketch, the artist then creates a value study for a finished landscape painting. The importance of interpreting the subject is emphasized as the artist arranges a still life and then demonstrates selecting shapes from the subject to be included in the composition.

Experimental Water Media videoExperimental Water Media

In this video the artist helps students expand their imagination by combining media. Watercolor is combined with graphite and charcoal, colored pencils, pastels, and oil pastels, resulting in a variety of special effects and abstract forms. Collage with tissue and torn paper as well as newspaper are added to watercolor in a mixed media painting. Stephen Quiller demonstrates a landscape painting utilizing some of the experimental techniques, with examples of several contemporary artist paintings.

This video is targeted for high school, college, and beginning adults. Stephen Quiller demonstrates how to get started easily with acrylic painting. Basic materials are shown with pigments, a palette using freezer paper, and brushes and their care. The artist shows how to use acrylic-like watercolor with thin washes or in a translucent and opaque style. Demonstrations of a landscape, cityscape, and a still life further explore these properties.

This program presents a variety of ideas that motivate students to see and to visualize subject matter, creating more spontaneous work. Through a series of short demonstrations, students learn to look at negative shapes and to paint around the subject.
