by CrystalProductions
These 20-minute videos can be purchased
individually or as a set. The novice will
be able to use the whole set while the intermediate
and advanced painters with knowledge in the
basics of watercolor techniques and color
may want the videos Composition,

What You Paint. SQ
Watercolor Methods
This program introduces a variety of materials for
watercolor including different types of papers, brushes,
and tube and pan pigments. Demonstrations with these
materials explore wet-on-wet, controlled washes, dry
brush, lifting pigment with a brush, scarring the paper
and spattering. A demonstration painting utilizing
these methods is then completed.

Color
The artist presents
an introductory overview of color concepts
and color combinations. Some of the subjects
presented use primary, secondary, and intermediate
color, after-image, intensity, contrast, color value
as well as monochromatic and analogous color schemes.
A demonstration painting using complementary colors
explores how many of these concepts are used. Masterworks
also reinforce these concepts.

Composition
Stephen Quiller shows
painters how to develop compositions progressively
from different subjects and how various
shapes and values of a subject can trigger
ideas for the painting. Starting with a
quick compositional sketch, the artist then
creates a value study for a finished landscape
painting. The importance of interpreting
the subject is emphasized as the artist arranges a
still life and then demonstrates selecting shapes from
the subject to be included in the composition.

Experimental Water Media
In this video the artist
helps students expand their imagination
by combining media. Watercolor is combined
with graphite and charcoal, colored pencils, pastels,
and oil pastels, resulting in a variety of special
effects and abstract forms. Collage with tissue and
torn paper as well as newspaper are added to watercolor
in a mixed media painting. Stephen Quiller demonstrates
a landscape painting utilizing some of the experimental
techniques, with examples of several contemporary artist
paintings.

Acrylic Painting
This video is targeted
for high school, college, and beginning
adults. Stephen Quiller demonstrates
how to get started easily with acrylic painting.
Basic materials are shown with pigments,
a palette using freezer paper, and brushes
and their care. The artist shows how
to use acrylic-like watercolor with thin
washes or in a translucent and opaque style.
Demonstrations of a landscape, cityscape,
and a still life further explore these properties.

Visualizing
What You Paint
This program presents
a variety of ideas that motivate students
to see and to visualize subject matter,
creating more spontaneous work. Through
a series of short demonstrations, students
learn to look at negative shapes and to
paint around the subject. They learn to
see more abstractly a “mother color” while
painting on-location or in the studio .
