Stephen Quiller Videos/DVDs

From Famous Printer Films by Jack Richeson

Now on DVD A few years ago, I had the opportunity to do two videos in my home environment of the mountains of Colorado. I painted the high mountain peaks and streams, beaver ponds and aspen groves, and did a lot of work right in my studio along the Rio Grande River. The results are two videos, both more than 2½ hours in length that are packed with information. Jack Richeson & Company has put a lot of time and money into producing these videos, now also on DVD. The end result is worth it.

(on-location)
Stephen Quiller on location

This program presents the complete package of how I develop my approach for on-location painting.

I start by presenting my 12-color palette, and basic principles of color including value and intensity.

I discuss complementary colors and illustrate how they can best be used, followed by a discussion and demonstration of how to work with color families and their opposites to obtain maximum luminosity of hue. I expand on these color relationships to demonstrate how versatile the palette can be and how any color can be mixed.

I then do a few small studies on site. In the corner of the screen the camera shows the actual subject, and below it the palette and how each color is mixed, while on the main part of the screen the image is being painted. I show some additional colors that I use on my palette and why they are beneficial, and then discuss papers, granulation, and lifting qualities. Finally, I go into greys and near-greys, darks and blacks, how they are mixed and how they best can be used in painting. All of this is done in transparent watercolor, but I also talk a bit about opaques and how they can be used in this process, to add impact to a painting.

At this point, we move to a beaver pond that happens to be one of my favorite places to paint. I discuss what is important to bring along on a painting outing and how to set up. I then start by doing a drawing and discussing the composition and my thoughts on how I want to approach the painting. I begin the finished painting demonstration, incorporating much of the information that has been presented.

At the end of this program, there is a gallery of plein air paintings that I have done in different places throughout the world with a bit of my narration. SQ

Complete Watermedia Workshop videoComplete Watermedia: A Workshop with Stephen Quiller

Painting for the On-Location Workshop, CreedeWatermedia is a term that encompasses any medium using water to thin or dilute the paint. This includes watercolor, gouache, acrylic and casein.

The purpose of this program is to give the viewer a solid foundation in each of these watermedia and how they work in combination .

First, I demonstrate and discuss each of these watermedia and their visual qualities and handling characteristics when used transparent, translucent and opaque. Then I discuss and demonstrate different watermedia combinations such as watercolor and gouache or watercolor and casein. I demonstrate a watermedia and drawing media approach as well as my approach to collage. At this time I talk of different paper supports that I paint on and why I choose one or another for a particular work.

You will view the demonstration from the start to finish.

I start with the drawing and discuss the composition and what I am pursuing with my inspiration. Then the painting is executed in acrylic and casein, two of my favorite media, along with some drawing media.

Finally, I show a gallery of my paintings and talk of the work along with the media used and why it is used. SQ
