Complete
En Plein Air: A Workshop with Stephen Quiller
(on-location)
This program
presents the complete package of how I
develop my approach for on-location painting.
I
start by presenting my 12-color palette,
and basic principles of color including
value and intensity.
I discuss complementary colors
and illustrate how they can best be used,
followed by a discussion and demonstration
of how to work with color families and
their opposites to obtain maximum luminosity
of hue. I expand on these color relationships
to demonstrate how versatile the palette
can be and how any color can be mixed.
I then do a few small studies on site.
In the corner of the screen the camera shows
the actual subject, and below it the palette
and how each color is mixed, while on the
main part of the screen the image is being
painted. I show some additional colors that
I use on my palette and why they are beneficial,
and then discuss papers, granulation, and
lifting qualities. Finally, I go into greys
and near-greys, darks and blacks, how they
are mixed and how they best can be used in
painting. All of this is done in transparent
watercolor, but I also talk a bit about opaques
and how they can be used in this process,
to add impact to a painting.
At this point, we move to a beaver pond
that happens to be one of my favorite places
to paint. I discuss what is important to
bring along on a painting outing and how
to set up. I then start by doing a drawing
and discussing the composition and my thoughts
on how I want to approach the painting. I
begin the finished painting demonstration,
incorporating much of the information that
has been presented.
At the end of this program, there is a gallery
of plein air paintings that I have done in
different places throughout the world with
a bit of my narration. SQ
